ROUSH Performance Road Racing Team 2012 Season Recap

IMG5724-XL At last, the 2012 Continental Tire Series season has come to an end.  It's been a hard year in many ways, but the success that we've had wouldn't mean much if it was easy.  As the war drums fell quiet, we walked out of the dust with a second place finish, both at the final race and in the season's point standings.

The season had a rough start at Daytona, just like we had in the 2011 season.  However, this year's problem at Daytona was much more dramatic.  As you may remember, an engine problem put us out of the race last year.  This year, our run ended here early in the race with a crash at turn one.  It was a heart-breaking blow for our team, but we pulled ourselves together and dug ourselves out of that hole.

From there, things got better, a lot better.  With only one exception, we podiumed at every single event after Daytona.  That one exception was at Laguna Seca, where my co-driver, Billy Johnson, was hit in the left rear and run off the road due to no fault of his own.  The result of these events was both a broken radiator and front sway bar.  Excluding these two poor finishes due to unfortunate incidents, our average finish for the season was 1.875.  It'd be nice if we could take a mulligan on these two rough finishes.  However, that's not a reality in racing, at least not in our series or any that I know of.

231111_228770847137875_183155841699376_1139865_583528_n Season Performance Stats
Here is a list of our finishes for the season:

  • Daytona (January 28): 71st (crash)
  • Homestead (March 5): 2nd
  • Barber Motorsport Park (April 9): 3rd
  • VIR (May 14): 1st
  • Lime Rock Park (May 28): 3rd
  • Watkins Glen (June 3): 1st
  • Road America (June 24): 2nd
  • Laguna Seca (July 9): 41st (off-road incident)
  • New Jersey Motorsports Park (July 23): 1st
  • Mid-Ohio (September 17): 2nd

Here are some year-over-year stats showing the improved performance that we had over last year:

IMG5339-XL Championship position:

  • 2010: 3rd
  • 2011: 2nd

Victories:

  • 2010: 2
  • 2011: 3

Podiums:

  • 2010: 6
  • 2011: 8

One of the most notable races this year for me personally was Road America.  Although I had been to this track as a child traveling with my father, I had never driven on the track before, at least not in the real world.  Starting months before the event, I spent as much time as possible at Road America in the iRacing.com simulator, studying the subtleties of each turn.  As expected, the simulator was very accurate.  As the real-life event weekend began, I was instantly quick and only got faster as the weekend went on.

Unfortuntely, we had a shock go bad for qualifying.  So, we didn't have a great starting position (12th), and early in the race, we had to do serve a drive-through penalty for contact with a BMW in an incident which was arguably unavoidable for us.

Another interesting point to talk about for this race was the advantage that the Camaro's had just been given.  At this point in the year, Grand-Am had just removed the requirement for them to have a restrictor on their 6.2 liter engine.  They were also at a comparable weight to our Mustang.  Meanwhile, the current rules stated that we were to have a restrictor on our 5.0L engine.  Yet another point is that Road America has a lot of long straights, which naturally favor cars with more horsepower.  Despite all of this, we battled through the field and contended for the win right up until the final green flag lap.

It's been a wild ride this year.  There is a lot of great talent on the teams competing in Grand-Am.  So, like I said earlier, success is hard to come by here, but when you achieve it, it has real meaning, and as much as we (and every other team) may grumble when a call is made that we don't feel is fair, I have to hand it to Grand-Am.  They do an excellent job at keeping vehicles that are so fundamentally different competitive with one another.  I, for one, wouldn't want their job.

At the beginning of this year, we transitioned from the older FR500C platform (2005-2009 body style Mustang) to the new Boss 302R.  Ford Motor Company has created another great platform for the track and the street with this new car.  I personally take great pride in piloting our ROUSH Mustang race car, which uses the same Ford Mustang platform that you can drive on the street, against premium brand-vehicles from around the world.

I also can't thank our sponsors and partners enough for all that they do to support us: ROUSH Performance, PWR, MechanixWear, Sparco, GoPro, USANA, Ford, the US Army Engineering Directorate, and BMRS.  Not only do these companies help us in our pursuit of victories, but they are also quality companies that I am proud to be associated with and promote.

The ROUSH Performance team as a whole did more than I could have asked for this year.  To Brad Francis, Jeff Campey, Billy Johnson, and all of the crew and guys back at the shop, I humby give thanks for all that you do.  From the engineering side, preparing our race car long before unloading at the track, to the guys going over the wall to slam on a new set of tires and fill the car with fuel, our team is a major force to recon with.  Even when walking from the podium after winning our races this year, we were immediately discussing what could have gone better and how we could improve heading into the next race.  It's that intense desire to improve that has brought us our success this year and that we will bring to the table for our chase for the championship in 2012.  Goal #1 for us in 2012 is to leave Daytona with a good finish to have a solid start in the point standings.

But this year isn't quite over yet.  The season is over, but we have cars being prepared in the shop, and we have a couple of Grand-Am sanctioned test sessions coming up in October and November.  As for my own preparation, I'm practicing locally with my new track car, at the gokart track, on iRacing.com, and I may even be going to a rally school with Billy Johnson to develop some new skills and refine old ones.  And of course, I'm continuing to push my level of fitness with exercise and nutrition.  Stay tuned for more updates on all of these soon.

2012 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang Hyper-Series Announced

2012-hyper-detroit Lively. Tireless. Active. Fierce. Excited. The vehicle design team at ROUSH Performance continues to build on their theme of DETROIT MUSCLE | REDEFINED by launching a limited quantity of ROUSH Stage 3 (RS3) Mustangs aptly defined as the Hyper-Series.

The 2012 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang is powered by a 50-state legal TVS 2.3L ROUSHcharger® system that delivers over 540HP and 465 ft/lbs of torque. The powertrain works in concert with the ROUSH-calibrated suspension that lowers the Mustang by almost an inch, and enables the vehicle to pull over 1G of lateral force on a dry skid pad. The ROUSH-tuned performance exhaust delivers a throaty growl that let's everyone know that you're piloting some Detroit Muscle.

The Hyper-Series builds on the ROUSH Stage 3's horsepower and handling by offering a set of four limited edition appearance packages. "The 2012 RS3 Mustang has been a big hit with our customers and enthusiasts. Not just because of the RS3's power and handling performance, but also because of the 288 graphics and paint color combinations that can be selected," says Gary Jurick, VP and General Manager of ROUSH Performance. "The Hyper-Series introduces four spectacular and unique graphics and interior colors that provide a customized appearance to the RS3."

Each 2012 RS3 Hyper-Series Mustang comes standard with black body paint as the base. The Hyper-Series palette includes these four color options: "Mat It Mango", "Gas It Green", "Punch It Purple", and "Launch It Lemon". For the 2012 model year, ROUSH Performance will only build twenty-five vehicles of each color. Vehicles will be serialized as ROUSH certified builds, and will be numbered as per their production spot for each Hyper-Series color (ie: "Vehicle #12 of 25 – Mat It Mango").

"The materials used in the Hyper-Series graphics really allow these unique colors to pop and dance in the changing sunlight," continues Gary Jurick. "The primary graphic color is hyper black, to compliment the hyper black wheels, and then the graphics accent stripe appears in the selected Hyper-Series color." This color is then applied to the exterior graphics, badges, and rear faux gas cap. The dynamic accent color also carries through the interior on the suede door panels, leather seating, and the shift boot stitching.

2011-hyper-street Each 2012 RS3 Hyper-Series Mustang comes with two shifter balls that are easily swapped out depending on the mood of the driver. "The Hyper-Series shifter ball color really 'pops' as you view the interior of one of these Hyper-Series RS3's!" says Jurick. "We decided to include a second shifter ball that’s a bit more conservative, if preferred."

The 2012 RS3 Hyper-Series includes a suede-wrapped steering wheel to add a comfortable feel while driving a performance car. Finally, each new RS3 Hyper-Series owner will receive a unique accessories package including ROUSH apparel and display items to commemorate their serialized Hyper-Series vehicle.

The Hyper-Series RS3 is covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and is currently available with a 6-speed manual transmission only. Click here for more information and retail package pricing on the 2012 ROUSH Hyper-Series Stage 3.

The 2012 ROUSH Stage 3 Hyper-Series will be available from ROUSH Performance beginning in October, 2011.

    • The ROUSH R2300 supercharger featuring Eaton's new cutting edge Twin Vortices Series technology (TVS) that delivers more power and better fuel economy in a smaller package for uncompromising performance.

By comparison, the original Eaton supercharger features three lobes twisted 60 degrees. The fourth lobe and added twist, when combined with NEWLY redesigned air inlet and outlet ports, greatly enhance thermal efficiency, deliver higher volumetric capacity, enable higher operating speeds, creates a smoother, more efficient flow of air into the engine and has improved noise and vibration characteristics.
      Twin-Vortices-Series-Supercharger-w-Rotors

    • Supercharger runs on the first-sheave FEAD allowing ROUSH to integrate a heavy duty tensioner designed to handle the increased load of the R2300 supercahrger and applying the load closer to the #1 main bearing, thus increasing durability.

Introducing Our New Track Practice and Development Car

20110818-track-car1 Racing for the #61 ROUSH Performance Mustang in Grand-Am has been intense this summer, but with only one race left, there will be a lot of time till our next event in Daytona (Jan. 2012). Like any sport, you must get in plenty of practice to excel. That's one of the reasons that ROUSH Performance has prepared a track car for use at near-by road courses, on drag strips, and at AutoX events. As you may remember, last spring ROUSH Performance fielded two cars in the One Lap of America, which involved races at road courses, a drag strip, and an AutoX event. This car will allow us to get some good practice in case we choose to return to the event in the future. We also plan on doing ride and drives with fans and members of the media with this car, along with doing some training in driving with the ROUSH Performance staff.

As you can see in the photos here, the car is a white 2012 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang. It has the Blue Bayou graphic with black accent stripes.  Click here to see the full gallery.

20110818-track-car2 But what about what it has under the hood? The car features the stock 540hp 2012 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang powertrain. Some of the other key features are the Stage 3 performance suspension, ROUSH 20-inch wheels, Cooper RS3 tires, and the ROUSH 4-piston brake system. So, not only can this car fly off the line, it can also stop and turn with authority.

The car has an upgraded differential, EATON's TruTrac, which is an excellent choice for road course use. We also have an EATON Detroit Locker, which is traditionally thought of for use at the drag strip, but I personally have had a lot of good experiences using the Detroit Locker on road courses as well. We'll be talking more about the differences between these two systems in future posts.

Another important part of this car is the data acquisition system. We will be using two products from AiM for this: the MXL and the SOLO. In order to refine your driving, it's critical to have good data to review. In our #61 Mustang, we constantly look at data from our AiM MXL, both to improve our driving and to help in making set-up adjustments.

I'm sure that you have also noticed the Mickey Thompson logos above the rear tires. At the drag strip, we'll be running both RS3 tires as well Mickey Thompson drag radials. We'll be talking about what we've found as we practice with both of these great tires.
Some of the other topics that we'll be releasing on this car include the following:
    • Videos and recaps of sessions at the track
    • How to use AiM data to improve your driving
    • Driving tips
    • Modifications
    • Set-up advice
    • Component features
Tomorrow (Friday August 18, 2011), I'll be taking the track car to Waterford Hills country club, which is a road course about 30 miles from ROUSH Performance's headquarters.
Stay tuned for more updates soon!

ROUSH Performance Wins At New Jersey

DSC_4777sm This is Jack Roush Jr. here, and I wanted to give you a snapshot of what's going on with our Grand-Am road racing program.  In case you missed it, last week's Continental Tire Series race at New Jersey Motorsports Park was a good one for the #61 ROUSH Performance Mustang. We won the race and lead the most laps. Between my co-driver Billy Johnson and I, we lead 35 of the 87 total laps of the race. Billy and I have had some good history at this track. I've personally felt comfortable at this track from the first race that we did there two years ago, as well as last year where we lead all but four race laps and also won the race.

Like last year, heat was a definitely a huge factor. The ambient temperature was 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but inside the car it was much hotter. Cabin temperatures ranged from 120 to 150 degrees, not to mention the fact that we're wearing thick firesuits and helmets. As bad as this could have been, I felt that we handled the heat very well both in the car and on pit road. Did I mention that we also had a lightning fast pit stop, as always?

For the week leading up the race, we knew that it was going to be hot, really hot. So Billy and I made sure to hydrate. I also have to give credit to our nutritional sponsor USANA Health Sciences. Their high quality supplements and nutrition bars helped us perform at our best despite the environmental extremes that we were in.

One thing that really helped us at this event was the set-up that we showed up with. Our crew chief Jeff Campey, studied his set-up notes, taking into account the characteristics of the tracks that we raced at and what works well on the car at each of them. He then made an educated decision at what should run well, and he nailed it. The car was fast right out of the gate and other than subtle changes to manage tire temperatures, we really didn't make any changes to the car. As a result, Billy and I were able to focus fully on improving our driving.

I also have to hand it to Ford for building a great platform in the Mustang for us to race with. As you may know, the cars that we race in our series are based on production chassis with very few modifications from the vehicles that you can buy from the dealership. This is very much showroom-stock racing. One of the keys to success that we've had is the powertrain. The #61 ROUSH Performance Mustang has the Ford production 5.0L engine. Not only does it deliver the power that we need, but it also has the gas mileage that helps us with our fuel pit strategy to put us where we want to be at the end of the race.

I'd also like to thank our other great sponsors: BMRS, PWR, Sparco, Kooks Custom Headers, Mechanix Wear, and the U.S. Army Engineering Directorate.

You can see the Continental Tire Series race at New Jersey on Saturday July 30th at 3:00pm on SPEED.

Jack Roush, Jr. and Billy Johnson take first place at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

Jack-and-Billy-Win-at-New-Jersery-Motorsports-Parkway July 23, 2011 (New Jersey Motorsports Park):  Jack Roush Jr. and Billy Johnson combined to score their third Grand Sport victory of the season in the No. 61 ROUSH Performance Ford Mustang Boss 302R this weekend. It was their second consecutive dominant victory at the 2.25-mile, 12-turn Thunderbolt Raceway. Roush started third and took the lead on Lap 15. He led 21 circuits before handing the car over to Johnson, who led the final 14 circuits. A year ago, they combined to lead all but four of the 87 laps.

"Our plan is to go to Mid-Ohio (for the season finale) and win that one as well. We'll see where the cards fall and if we're able to get a little bit of luck on our side, we might be able to wrap it up." - Billy Johnson, No. 61 ROUSH Performance Ford Mustang Boss 302R.  "Crew chief Jeff Campey set the car up back at the shop before we came here, and we didn't have to change it very much. The car drove great and handled awesome the whole time I was in. The heat wasn't as bad as I was fearing." - Jack Roush Jr., No. 61 ROUSH Performance Ford Mustang Boss 302R.

The final race of the 2011 season takes place September 16-17 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.  For more information and Continental Tire Series stats, please visit Grand-Am.com.
